At Nelson Primary School, our vision for history teaching is to foster responsible, active citizens with high academic and social aspirations. Through the exploration of the past, pupils develop a deep understanding of responsible citizenship and the lessons we can learn from historical actions.

Our history lessons encourage pupils to recognise the significant impact their actions can have on friends, family, and the wider community. By studying the actions and decisions of individuals and societies from the past, pupils cultivate humility, empathy, and a sense of accountability for their choices. We want our pupils to understand the interconnectedness of historical events, and help them grasp how actions shape the lives of individuals and communities. This understanding provides our pupils with a broader perspective on their own decisions and their potential to influence the world around them.

At our school, we want to empower pupils to prevent the repetition of mistakes by equipping them with knowledge and critical thinking skills to challenge injustice, discrimination, and harmful ideologies. Through the study of history, pupils develop the ability to identify patterns, learn from past errors, and actively work towards creating a better future.

We inspire our pupils to believe in their capacity to make a positive difference. By showcasing historical figures who have made significant contributions to society, we encourage students to see themselves as agents of change. They recognise their ability to shape the world and are motivated to take action.

Alongside academic excellence, our teaching of history supports social development. We nurture skills such as critical thinking, empathy, and ethical and compassionate decision-making, enabling students to navigate complex social issues with compassion and integrity.

We hope that through learning about history, children will develop a lifelong love of the subject. We believe that history is an important subject that can lead to many exciting careers in the future.

At Nelson, we really love teaching history, and our pupils tell us that they enjoy their lessons. Our aim is to help children learn about Britain's past and the wider world around them. We want them to be curious about history, ask questions, and think carefully about what they learn.

Through learning about history, we also want children to become responsible citizens. This means learning from the past and understanding how our actions can impact others. By learning about people who have made positive changes in the world, we hope to inspire children to make a difference themselves.

Our history curriculum is designed to help children learn important skills, like asking good questions, thinking critically, and making good decisions. We also want them to understand the diversity of different societies and cultures, as well as their own identity.

We believe that learning about history should be fun and engaging. That's why we use lots of interesting stories, books, and activities to bring history to life. We also make sure that our lessons connect with the local area, so that children can learn about the history of the place where they live.

We hope that through learning about history, children will develop a lifelong love of the subject. We believe that history is an important subject that can lead to many exciting careers in the future.
