The Governing Body

Chair’s Introduction

I'm Daniel Taylor, the Chair of Governors at Nelson Primary School. I'm delighted to welcome you to the Governors section of our website.

We have a very active governing body at Nelson, and we work closely with the Headteacher, Miss Forrest, and all the staff at the school. Our role is to:

  • Set the school's aims and objectives for the long term.
  • Agree and review policies to achieve these aims and objectives.
  • Monitor and evaluate the school's performance both educationally and financially.
  • Challenge and support the school leadership team.

We aim to represent and take into account the views of a range of stakeholders, including parents, the Local Authority, school staff, and the community.

We're delighted that the school is recognised as 'good' by Ofsted, but we're not complacent. We're always working alongside the Senior Leadership Team to build on our success and improve the learning outcomes of all our students.

There are currently 9 governors at Nelson, and we're appointed through various routes. There are parent governors, who are elected by the parents themselves, and co-opted governors who are people from our community who can bring skills to the Governing Body to contribute to the school. Co-opted governors are appointed by the Governing Body itself.

Parent Governors hold a fixed term of office – normally four years and are elected into their posts. The school then organises the elections and will publicise the process of nominations, voting and announcements from all parents of children at Nelson Primary School.

As a full committee, we meet at least once each term. We also have two subcommittees to discuss issues such as resources, standards and safeguarding, in addition to discussing matter related to Finance and Premises, Curriculum and Community in more detail.

Minutes of our Governing Body Meetings are available on request from the Chair of Governors, contactable here

We're always keen to hear from anyone who is interested in becoming a governor, and, of course, if you have any questions or feedback, please contact the school office.

Best regards,

Daniel Taylor Chair of Governors Nelson Primary School

“To help ensure that our governing board is reflective of the community we serve, we collect and review our governors' diversity data to help inform discussion and action. We do not currently publish this information online due to the small size of our board and the risk of inadvertently identifying an individual through the publication of their personal data.”
