Forming Letters (our formation phrases)

At Nelson, we follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics scheme to support children in learning to read and write. As part of this approach, we teach children not only the sounds that letters make but also how to form each letter correctly. To help with this, we use simple formation phrases, shown in the last column of the chart, which give children an easy way to remember the correct starting point and direction for each letter. For example, for the letter ‘u’, the phrase is “Down and around the umbrella, stop at the top and down to the bottom and flick.” These phrases are used consistently in class so that children develop good handwriting habits alongside their phonics learning.
