Shelter building
Following on from a previous session, the main focus today was to construct shelters. The task today was to make a shelter large enough for a person to fit in. We reviewed the objectives of a shelter and then, using poles, tarps, boxes, rope and string, the children were left to try and solve problems and work out for themselves the best way to go about this. Some tried to do this on their own, whilst others made groups for which co-operation and communication were crucial. Their plans had to change as they tried different ideas, figuring out what worked and what didn’t. Once the session had finished, we looked at each other's shelter and their constructors were given the chance to explain how they got on.
