Buzzing with Excitement: Nelson Primary Welcomes Its First Bee Hive

Nelson Primary School, nestled in the heart of inner-city Ladywood, Birmingham, has taken an exciting step towards sustainability and hands-on science education with the arrival of its very first bee hive. Thanks to a generous grant from the British Bee Charity, pupils at Nelson are now officially real-life beekeepers – and the buzz around school is palpable.

Bees in the City

While our school may be in an urban setting, our values are rooted in nature and responsibility. At Nelson, we believe in nurturing active, responsible citizens – and learning to care for bees perfectly captures this ethos. Bees are vital to biodiversity and food production, yet their numbers are in worrying decline. What better way to inspire children to act for the environment than by giving them the chance to care for one of nature’s most important creatures?

A Grant with a Sting of Excitement

It all began when Miss Forrest, our headteacher, successfully secured a grant from the British Bee Charity. The funding covered a full hive, protective bee suits and essential equipment – everything needed to start our beekeeping journey.

The school’s commitment didn’t stop there. Seven members of staff stepped forward to train in beekeeping, completing a course led by Colin from the Birmingham & District Beekeepers Association. Colin has since become our school’s official bee mentor, generously volunteering his time and expertise to guide us every step of the way.

A Special Delivery on World Bee Day

On Tuesday 20th May – coincidentally, World Bee Day – our bee colony arrived… in the post! With Colin’s help, the bees were safely introduced to their new home in the school’s nature area. Children and staff alike watched in awe as the hive came to life, marking the start of an exciting new chapter.

Buzzing Through the Curriculum

Pupils are already learning about the fascinating lives of bees through our science curriculum, and the hive has opened up rich cross-curricular opportunities. From pollination and ecosystems to teamwork and environmental care, the learning is real, relevant and hands-on.

In the weeks ahead, pupils will don their bee suits, check the hive, and contribute to the care of the colony – gaining unique insight into nature, responsibility, and the impact of small actions.

Building a Buzz for the Future

Our bee project is about more than honey – it’s about instilling a lasting sense of stewardship and curiosity. In a city setting where access to nature can be limited, this initiative is a powerful way to connect our children to the natural world.

Nelson Primary is proud to be a school where bees – and young minds – can truly thrive.
